WHAT IS KIWANIS?

"Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis believes the most effective way to enhance a community is to enhance its children. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream, and succeed, great things will happen."

Kiwanis Clubs sponsor Kiwanis family organizations that provide young people and adults with opportunities to perform community service and develop leadership skills. One act of kindness can change the course of a life, proving that just one person can make a difference. Kiwanians have helped eradicate diseases, build schools, shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, and generate MILLIONS of SMILES.

Kiwanis members are service-minded men and women united in their commitment to and compassion for others. They dedicate more than six million volunteer hours and invest more than US$100 million annually in projects that strengthen communities and serve children. Kiwanians, through guidance and example, work to prepare today's children to be tomorrow's citizens.

Do you want to help children, meet quality people and share in some rewarding and fun times? Come have a good time while helping children. Come join us and be our guest at our upcoming Wednesday meetings. Together we can and help us make the world a better place, one kid and one smile at a time.

THE SOUTHLAKE CLUB

The Southlake Kiwanis club was created in February 2003 by Milton Glenn and a number of clubs in the area. The club started with 39 charter members with Robert Williams being the first president followed by Milton.

The club has grown to a membership of 54 as of May 2010 We meet for lunch on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at Timarron Country Club. We have a relatively young club with the majority of our members in their 40's and 50's with only a handful of retirees. We have a number of committees that are responsible for various functions of the club. Our current service projects include support of a variety of kid's focused groups including Save A Smile, a group of dentists who provide desperately-needed dental care to low income children; the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Community Storehouse in Keller, the Battered Women's Foundation of Bedford, the North Texas Youth Leadership Institute, a community youth leadership initiative targeting local students, and supports two Key clubs, which provides leadership experience and teaches the benefits of volunteering and getting involved.

The club also undertakes other volunteering projects including ringing the bell for the Salvation Army and “adopts” needy families during Thanksgiving and Christmas to help make their season's a bit brighter with gifts of toys, clothes and food. The Club also established the Stalcup Award, a leadership-based scholarship which honors the memory of former Dragon Coach Charlie Stalcup who demonstrated incredible grace and inspiration in his battle against skin cancer. Our primary fund raiser is a 5K fun run held on the second Saturday of May (see www.KSquared4kids.com to see this year's event in Southlake Town Square. The club also sponsors two 7 on 7 football tournaments during the year, and a New Year's Eve fundraiser.

Please feel free to join us at one of our meetings and enjoy some good fellowship. Come and “help serve the children of the world.”
